Social Media—It’s Not Just About Pictures of Your Friend’s Kid

It's More Than Personal

Social media is often associated with the sharing of personal photos, including pictures of one's pets. However, it is so much more than that.

For many people, social media has become an important tool for staying connected with friends and family, especially during the pandemic when in-person interactions have been limited. It allows people to share updates, news, and important events with their loved ones in a quick and convenient manner.

But social media is also an important platform for businesses, organizations, and individuals to promote their products or services, connect with customers, and build a brand. It can be an effective way to reach a large, targeted audience and drive traffic to a website or store.

In addition to its practical uses, social media can also be a source of entertainment and information. It is home to an endless array of memes, viral videos, and other forms of digital content that can bring joy and laughter to people's lives. It can also be a way to stay up-to-date on current events, discover new hobbies and interests, and engage in online communities centered around shared passions.

So while social media may be known for its role in showcasing people's furry friends, it is so much more than that. It has become an integral part of modern society, influencing everything from the way we communicate to the way we do business.

Everyone knows someone who only uses social media for posting every picture they take of their kid doing insignificant things. That's a good way to get blocked in my opinion. But if your business is not using social media, you are missing out on key opportunities to connect with your customers. Social media is no longer a new platform, but so many companies have little to no idea how to use it to build their business. Posting trade show pictures, work anniversaries and employee birthdays is not going to help your business grow. So what can you do through social media to help your business?

Help Your Customers

Sharing tips with your customers on social media is a great way to add value. If you give valuable tips to your customers, they are more likely to do business with you and recommend you to their friends. Ask yourself: Was this useful to my customers? Would my customers thank me for this tip?

You can also tell your story on social media. People want to know more about the people they are doing business with. Tell about how your business got started. Tell what your business means to you and how you want to help your customers.

Have Something To Follow, Like & Share

If you ask your customers to follow your business on social media (and you should be asking), you better have content for them to see. If someone goes to your page and your last post is from two years ago, they are not going to like your page or follow your business. You must have current, helpful information that will add value to your customers. Your content needs to be consistent too. Setup a schedule to post a couple times a week. This will allow you to have fresh content on a consistent basis.

Incentivize Your Customers To Share

Ask your customers to post about your business. Offer incentives for liking or sharing a post. One example is for every time a customer likes or shares a post over a specific timeframe, they are entered into a drawing for a free service or product. Another is to offer coupon codes on social media that customers can use in your business. This can drive existing as well as new customers to your social media pages.

These are just a few ideas. Be creative. You know what incentives your customers may want, so use social media to your advantage.

Yes, posting to social media regularly is time consuming, especially when you need to be providing services or products to your customers.
