Social Media Definitions Part 2

If you are a small business owner and you are not on social media, you are missing out on key opportunities to connect with your current and future customers. But many small business owners who use social media for their business don't understand what many of the terms associated with social media actually mean. Let's continue the list of social media terms started in part 1.

Cost Per Click (CPC)
This refers to the actual price you pay for each click on your ad on average. A low CPC means you’re getting more traffic at a lower price. A high CPC means you’re paying much more for traffic. CPC can vary based on many factors, including who you’re targeting with your ad, what locations you’re targeting, and how relevant your ad is to your target audience.

Employee Advocacy
This refers to when co-workers at your company support and promote your brand on social media. This could be as simple as frequently liking and commenting on company posts and sharing branded content. A recent study showed that messages that were shared by employees reached 5 times more people than when it was posted through other channels.

Evergreen Content
This type of social media content can stay relevant over a long period of time. You can leave it up and periodically repost it without appearing out of date. Advice is more likely to be evergreen than news of current events.

Impressions
Impressions measure the total number of times users saw your post or stories. You may count multiple impressions for a single user if they have looked at your post more than once. Each social network counts impressions differently.

Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
This is a metric that shows whether your social media campaign is meeting its goals. Perhaps your digital marketing goal is to promote a certain product. One KPI that measures its success would be conversion rates for this product.

Native Advertising
Native advertising is promotional content that blends into its environment rather than standing out as an ad. Many online readers tend to ignore banner ads. They are more likely to view and interact with promotions that come in the form of content.

Reach
This is a social media metric that tells you how many people have seen your post. It differs from impressions in that even if a user sees your post multiple times, they still only count as one person reached. For instance, if one person looks at your post 1000 times, your impressions would be 1000, but your reach would be one. Reach allows you to see the size of your audience.

Shareable Content
One key strategy in digital marketing is to post social media content viewers want to share. This expands the brand’s reach. Shareable content generates a strong reaction. This stimulates people to share it with their friends.
