Selling the Moments Part 1

Selling the Moments Part 1
Have you ever heard of the Disney Paradox? The Disney Paradox refers to the idea that overall you would probably be happier sitting on your couch watching TV than you would be at a Disney park. At the park, there are crowds and humidity and long lines for rides and children crying and strollers EVERYWHERE! But when you think back, the Disney trip stands out as a highlight of the year. Why is this?

Well, over time our memories tend to washout the bad parts and we are left with pieces of time that relate to the best moments or peak moments. You remember the look on your child's face as you fly through Peter Pan's story. Or the feeling of excitement when you're riding a rollercoaster with your teenager. And the list goes on and on because Disney provides these peak moments that your couch can't offer.

Elevation
There are several ways to sell the moments for your customers and even your own employees. The first is elevation. Elevation refers to moments that lift us above the normal everyday experiences. This may happen at birthday parties or sporting events—events that are above your normal day-to-day activities. There's a hotel in Los Angeles that has excelled in elevating the moments for their guests.

The Magic Castle in L.A. is not a castle at all. It looks more like an apartment complex from the 50s. The rooms are mediocre, the lobby looks like the lobby where you might get your oil changed and the whole place looks very average. So why is this the number 2 hotel in all of Los Angeles? Because they sell the moments.

On a wall near the pool at the Magic Castle, there is a red phone with a sign above it that reads "Popsicle Hotline." When anyone picks up that red phone, the voice on the other end says something like, "Popsicle Hotline—we'll be right out." Shortly after that, a door opens and an employee in a suit and white gloves comes out with a silver tray with, you guessed it, popsicles on it and everyone at the pool gets a popsicle.

They offer a laundry service in which you drop off your clothes in the morning and they will be ready that night for free. The Magic Castle has magicians in the lobby. You can rent movies to watch in your room for free. When you see all this, you begin to understand why it should be near the top of your list of places to stay in L.A. And years later, you won't remember that the beds weren't that great, but you will remember a phone by the pool called the Popsicle Hotline and your kids loving it!
